Constipation
Get to the root of the problem!
Constipation:
From the disease model perspective chronic constipation may be caused by a low fiber diet, food sensitivities (especially dairy), low water intake, hypothyroidism, motility disorders of the intestines-usually caused by too many stress inputs to the nervous system. (Sympathetic dominance)Be sure to rule out prescription drugs and even dietary supplements as a causative factor.
Intestinal dysbiosis and decreased digestive enzymes, inadequate HCL production, sluggish liver metabolism with possibly inadequate bile secretion are also common areas that need to be addressed with chronic constipation.
Although occasional use of laxatives to treat constipation is okay, one should not rely on them as they can be habit forming. The best approach is to reduce the stress input and correct the diet.
Note: Acute abdominal obstruction with severe pain can be a serious medical situation and requires immediate medical supervision.
Signs and symptoms:
- Incomplete evacuation of stools
- Hard stools
- Straining to defecate
- Hemmorroids are often common from straining.
Dietary Changes:
- Increase fiber slowly to reach 30 grams of fiber daily.
- Avoid dairy and other potential food sensitivities
- Drink more water.
- Exercise- to increase tone
- Reduce stress-see disease model
Protocol:
1. Blue Heron- 2 caps 2X daily
2. Probiotic pearls- one at bedtime
